German minister upbeat on Iran trade vehicle before Rouhani talks

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif speaks during a news conference in Baghdad, Iraq, May 26, 2019.

Zarif said: "Mr. Trump himself has announced that the US has launched an economic war against Iran".

"We had frank and serious talks with Maas", said Zarif, one of the nuclear deal's architects.

Zarif also said that the "economic war" against Iran should be stopped as the only way to reduce tension in the region.

Friction between Tehran and Washington ratcheted up last month, a year after US President Donald Trump's decision to pull Washington out of a 2015 nuclear deal brokered between Iran and world powers and reimpose sweeping sanctions on Tehran.

"Mr. Trump himself has announced that the USA has launched an economic war against Iran".

"We haven't put much hope in INSTEX", spokesman Abbas Mousavi said, according to Iranian state television.

However, Amano's speech on Monday differed from past statements because it did not explicitly say that Iran was abiding by its nuclear-related commitments under the 2015 deal.

Japan wants to lower the temperature, officials say, with Abe winning Trump's blessing for the mediation trip when the United States president visited Tokyo last month.

European Union efforts to overcome U.S. sanctions and continue trading with Iran have been hindered by the reliance of global trade on the USA dollar.

In early May, Iran gave a 60-day ultimatum to Europe to activate the financial mechanism, threatening that otherwise Tehran would limit its commitments as stipulated in JCPOA.

There are wars in Syria and Yemen, and it's not a war here, and we do our best to avoid a war.

The tensions worsened after the U.S. military announced it was dispatching reinforcements to the Middle East in response to alleged "Iranian threats" as well as the sabotage of four ships at the entrance to the Gulf on May 12. "The Europeans and other signatories of the JCPOA should normalise economic ties with Iran".

Commenting on calls on Iran to sit down for direct talks with the USA, he said, "They should first show us that negotiations with the USA will have a benefit and then ask for talks".

The JCPOA offered Iran sanctions relief in exchange for curbing its nuclear capabilities.

Mr Maas warned that the situation in the region was "highly explosive and extremely serious" and could lead to a military escalation between the U.S. and Iran.

In May, Iran also said it would begin enriching uranium closer to weapons grade if Europe didn't come up with new terms for the deal by July 7.

Mr Mousavi said that the Iranian homemade air defence systems are reliable tools and the Islamic republic does not need S-400. Germany is a signatory to the accord.

The Europeans have set up a "special objective vehicle" that would essentially allow goods to be bartered between Iranian and foreign companies without direct financial transactions.

In late May, the United Nations nuclear watchdog said that "up to 33" more advanced IR-6 centrifuges have been installed and that "technical discussions in relation to the IR-6 centrifuges are ongoing".
