Google says cutting off Huawei could pose national security risk

"But new Huawei phones will no longer be able to have Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram apps pre-installed", Facebook Inc said. Although new owners of current Huawei devices will simply be able to download Facebook apps from the Play Store, owners of the company's upcoming devices will be left out. However, none of the apps will come pre-installed. Whereas Google will continue to provide updates to existing Huawei smartphone models - even ones that haven't been built yet - Facebook apps are affected immediately. As a result, Google restricted Huawei's access to its Android operating system.

In a recent report by the Financial Times, Google argues that a forked version of Android in which Huawei is reportedly working on won't be safe for all and might raise security risks for the US.

The US president signed an order banning US companies from doing business with Huawei, citing matters of national security.

The presumption is that Huawei is not as competent to secure its own OS as Google is. Google argues that this "hybrid" version of Android will have more bugs and is more likely to be hacked.

Google is anxious about the Android alternative that Huawei claims it has already finished. In fact, according to a report from the Financial Times, Google has warned the USA government of the potential security challenges arising from this ban on Huawei. This would be the biggest risk, according to Google, considering that the Chinese giant should hasten development, inevitably leaving security flaws that could be exploited to compromise smartphones. On one hand, Google is taking advantage of the 90-day moratorium it has been offered and is continuing to offer its services to Huawei until that expires. What if Samsung and others decide to move in similar directions once Huawei proves that it can be done in Europe and other global markets?

The Trump Administration blacklisted the Chinese technology giant in a policy move that will prevent it from buying semiconductors, software and other components from American suppliers.
