Apple's new $5,000 monitor doesn't come with the $1,000 stand

While the Mac Pro isn't a significant revenue generator for the company, it's a device that keeps Apple's important and influential customers loyal. That's cool. But between the holes on the outer metal housing, the long metal handles, and slight trapezoidal shape, the whole thing looks like an oversized cheese grater... on wheels. Composers can run up to 1000 audio tracks in Logic Pro X. Meanwhile, filmmakers can run three streams of 8k footage or 12 4K streams with the new Afterburner accelerator card.

The latest version marks Apple's first update of the Mac Pro series since 2013. As high-performance users have clamored for more powerful processors and upgradeable graphics, Apple's failure to support this sort of upgradability has been a huge source of frustration for a lot of power users. It will be available this fall starting at $5,999. The motherboard includes a new Thunderbolt 3 connection for the addition of new components.

Six years ago, Apple alienated members of its core fanbase with the release of a maligned Mac Pro, a desktop computer that had earlier built a reputation as a workhorse for creative professionals. It's called the Pro Display XDR because it comes with Extreme Dynamic Range because Apple says its HDR is better than anyone else's. The Mac Pro has two USB Type-C ports (with Thunderbolt 3) and two USB-A ports.

We were at the WWDC 2019 opening keynote and we checked out Apple's new Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR.

Apple is no stranger to expensive hardware, with the spec'd out iMac Pro running upwards of $15,000. Everything about the new desktop computer is enticing-from raw power, to sleek display options with the new 6K retina display-the actual appearance and design of the case, though... well that leaves a bit to be desired.

At the end of the day, the massive boost in power that the Mac Pro offers probably won't mean that much to everyday computing users.

Apple also announced a display to go with the Mac Pro, the Pro Display XDR, which will start at $4,999.

To create such a bright display, Apple says it had to use 576 blue (yes, blue) LEDs to illuminate the pixels. This "nano-texture" option users laser etching at the nanometer level that avoids the typical pitfalls of matte displays that can produce unwanted haze and sparkle. "Pro Display XDR starts at $4,999, the Pro Stand is $999 and the VESA Mount Adapter is $199". Instead of the "mesh" front, the new Mac Pro has a lattice of larger holes in the exterior stainless steel casing.
