Osaka's 16-match Grand Slam win streak ends

The top seed and reigning United States and Australian Open champion, crashed to a straight sets defeat, going down 6-4, 6-2 to the Czech who was ranked 42nd in the world before the tournament started.

"I think I was overthinking this calendar slam".

Asked if nerves had played a part in a fairly miserable Paris experience, she said: "Yeah, I would say that, but at the same time I don't want to blame how I played on that". She made 38 unforced errors in total compared to 13 from Siniakova.

She continued that trend as Siniakova broke Osaka's serve at 4-4 in the first set. "It's something I wanted to do forever but if it was that easy, everybody would have done it".

World number one Naomi Osaka's hopes of winning a third successive Grand Slam ended Saturday when she was knocked out of the French Open in the third round by unheralded Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic.

The first tennis player from Japan to be ranked No. 1 thought she was better suited to contend this time and spoke about eyeing a third consecutive major title - and moving halfway to a true Grand Slam.

On Tuesday and Thursday, she just about scraped into the office by a minute or two, edging past Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Victoria Azarenka after an unseemly struggle each time.

Siniakova took control in the second set, converting the first of two break points to go 3-2 up.

It decidedly was not Osaka's, who quickly gathered her things and headed to the Court Suzanne Lenglen locker room when the lopsided match was finished.

A double fault on break point left her 5-2 down and Siniakova completed the upset. Halep started the tournament as the bookies favourite despite her third seeding.

"I feel like saying that "I'm depressed" is a very strong statement because I felt that way before, and it's not as extreme as that".
