Tornado touched down in New Jersey: National Weather Service

There are only four other recorded instances when more than 500 USA tornadoes were observed in a 30-day period: in 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2011, according to Patrick Marsh, a meteorologist with the weather service's Storm Prediction Center.

"This also makes this May the 3rd wettest month for ANY month in (Kansas City's) 131-year period of record", the weather service tweeted.

It came at the same time as a tornado touched down outside Kansas City on the same night, leaving debris raining from the sky in various areas.

The storm apparently pushed a vehicle into a house there, killing 81-year-old Melvin Dale Hanna, the mayor said.

Damage from the storms that swirled through Kansas Tuesday was centralized in three areas around Douglas County, Sgt. Kristen Channel with the Douglas County Sheriff's Department told CNN.

Thirteen people were treated for injuries at LMH Health hospital in Lawrence, 11 of whom have been released after treatment, the hospital said. One storm cell in particular quickly became Tornado warned in the Southeast corner of the county, spawning a Tornado according to the National Weather Service. "Our crews had to clean it up in order to be safe". Power outages affecting a several hundred people are reported in southeastern Lehigh and upper Bucks counties as a strong storm moves eastward into Hunterdon County in New Jersey.
