Trump cuts off infrastructure talks with Democrats, demands end to investigations

According to Pelosi, Trump is "disappointed" that the Democrats are holding off for now, even as they intensify their investigations into the president's links to Russian Federation and his alleged obstruction of justice. The number of inquiries led by House Democrats has since grown to 10.

As the subpoenas have flown in recent weeks, White House officials have adopted a quasi-official policy of trying to goad Democrats into impeachment.

Five House committee chairs who are leading oversight of the Trump administration presented to their House Democratic colleagues, Pelosi told reporters after the meeting. "I just want it done". But he said, "You can't do it under these circumstances". "So get these phoney investigations over".

Trump reportedly left the meeting after only three minutes. The narrative of an overreaching Democratic Congress persecuting a president who has not been found guilty of any crime plays nicely into that, the Trump team believes.

"I don't do coverups", Trump fumed.

"For some reason", Ms Pelosi told reporters, "and maybe it was lack of confidence on his part - that he really couldn't match the greatness of the challenge that we have - he wasn't really respectful of the Congress and the White House working together".

After an angry Trump scrapped the infrastructure meeting as a result of those divisive comments, Conway asked Pelosi if she had a "direct response to the president".

Before the White House meeting, Pelosi met with House Democrats at the Capitol to discuss their investigations and the White House effort to stonewall them.

"Now that he was forced to actually say how he would pay for it, he chose to run away", Schumer said.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., taunted Trump by saying that he felt intimidated by Pelosi: is a "I don't think he does well with smart, strong women". Even some Republicans noted the shift.

Then-House Intelligence Committee ranking member Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) arrives for a Democratic caucus meeting in the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center in Washington on November 14, 2018. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY spoke up at the meeting, and some two dozen Democrats have signed on to the idea.

"Why does he get so earthed by Nancy Pelosi?" he said. "I pray for the United States of America".

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, another appointee of Obama, gave Trump's accounting firm Mazars LLP seven days to comply with the committee's subpoena and denied a request by Trump's attorneys to delay a decision pending an appeal.

Pelosi said the court victories were "no surprise".

On Wednesday, Trump made good on his threat. "Other conversations people want to have among themselves is up to them", she said.

The more Trump "defies us, the more that it's becoming an inevitability", she said. And, at least for now, most her caucus seems to be standing by her.

"This is just political revenge, (and) it's going to blow up in their face". The accusation came as some in the Democratic Party are pushing hard for impeachment proceedings.

Moments later, a livid Trump gathered journalists in the Rose Garden to announce that he could not deal with Democrats as long as they mount "phony investigations" that are increasingly leading to talk of what he called the "i-word" - impeachment. But Trump says they can't do both.

She has been running out a string of Trump insults since the meeting on Wednesday.
