Judge rejects Trump’s request to halt congressional subpoenas for his banking records

If the current course continues, however, the two sides will instead be fighting over who should shoulder the most blame.

"We are confronting what might be the largest, broadest cover-up in American history", Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D., Md.) told reporters, according to the Associated Press.

Donald Trump on Wednesday terminated a meeting with Democratic leaders after just a few minutes, saying he refuses to work with them on an infrastructure plan unless they stop investigating him and lift the threat of impeachment.

"They are looking for records about minors, about in-laws", said Strawbridge, claiming that even information about Trump's grandchildren could be swept up in the subpoenas. Hoyer added that if a House investigation "leads to other avenues including impeachment", then, "so be it".

"I don't do cover-ups", Trump told reporters. With a "no obstruction, no collusion" placard on his podium, Trump lashed out at Democrats.

The White House released a letter Tuesday night that Trump wrote Pelosi and Schumer letting them know his preference for Congress taking up the proposed USA trade deal with Mexico and Canada first. You can't go down two tracks at the same time.

President Trump says the Russian Federation investigation is over.

Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer responded to Trump's impromptu statement shortly thereafter, with Schumer describing describing Trump's justification as a "preplanned excuse".

"He came into the room".

"The more they stonewall, the more powerless people feel, and the more they want to take this immediate action", says Krystal Ball, a political commentator and host on The Hill's digital news channel. "And I just saw that Nancy Pelosi, just before our meeting, made a statement that 'We believe that the President of the United States is engaged in a cover-up'".

"It's clear the president doesn't want to do any of that", Schumer said.

Pelosi scheduled Wednesday's meeting with lawmakers from the Judiciary and Oversight committees after some members confronted her during a meeting among top Democrats Monday evening. The judge asked Trump attorney Patrick Strawbridge if he had asked Democrats to narrow the scope of their demands, and Strawbridge said he would "be happy to do so". It was no coincidence that both members spoke out after former White House counsel Don McGahn refused to testify before Congress, in deliberate defiance of a subpoena issued by the House Judiciary Committee.

But she emerged from the meeting with harsh words for the president.

"The question is ... how do we best do that?" says Representative Jayapal, who co-chairs the Progressive Caucus and called for impeachment over the weekend.

"It's time to put politics aside and actually put America first", McCarthy said Tuesday.

The more Trump "defies us, the more that it's becoming an inevitability", she said. "But I don't think that the caucus as a whole is there yet".

Still, Democrats are continuing to escalate their requests for information.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said the committee will vote to hold McGahn in contempt of Congress if he did not testify.

The subpoenas seek testimony and documents in connection with the committee's probe of whether the president obstructed Mueller's inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 us election and contacts between Trump's campaign team and Moscow.

The redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report documented alarming misconduct and obstruction of justice by President Trump.

"Our subpoenas are not optional", Nadler said.
