Varner's 81 at PGA worst round in final group of a major

Brooks Koepka has cemented his status as the most dominant golfer at the majors since Tiger Woods in his pomp, even if his second US PGA Championship win was tighter than expected.

The four-time major champion (who's won back-to-back titles at the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open) led the tournament from start to finish.

He won his second consecutive PGA Championship, besting his pal Dustin Johnson by 2 shots after almost blowing the record 7-shot advantage he carried into the final round.

A coronation nearly turned into a calamity but Brooks Koepka survived to win the PGA Championship for a second consecutive year on Sunday and establish himself as golf's new top dog. "I was in shock of what was kind of going on". "It's been a hell of a run".

"I knew if I could get off to a good start, which I did, that I could maybe put a little bit of pressure on him, and I did that, too", he said. "I think that's four of eight, I like the way that sounds".

Koepka fired a four-over par 74 final round at windy Bethpage Black to finish 72 holes on eight-under 272 and defeat Johnson by two strokes, replacing him as world number one as a result. He went on to claim his breakthrough major that tournament - triggering a wave of success in majors. "I like it more, personally, than I do in the States", reflected Koepka when he returned to a European Tour event at this year's Abu Dhabi Championship. Koepka is the first player to shoot two 63s in the same major, and the first to do so in consecutive years. ". Obviously I knew starting seven back that it was going to be a big feat to catch Brooks. This is definitely the most satisfying of all the ones I've won". "I don't know if I've dreamed of this".

Koepka opened at 6-1 at Caesars sportsbook to capture next month's U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links. "I'm just glad to have this thing back in my hands", Koepka said at the trophy presentation ceremony on the 18th green. "I can't tell you the last time I've made four bogeys in a row".

Bethpage was brutally hard championship golf, but golf played on a distortion of the game - a game never meant to be so penal and devoid of interesting - as opposed to punishing - recovery shots for players out of position. You're going to make a lot of mistakes, it's a major championship.

"I challenge anybody to go play this golf course in 15- to 20-mile-an-hour winds and see what they shoot". DJ played awesome. Congrats to him. That was pretty good.

Asked if he anxious that he would fail, Koepka replied: "It was definitely a test".

"If we don't get up trying to win a championship tomorrow, then all of us have no chance", List said. I feel like you look at Michael Jordan or - I've heard him talk about having a chip on his shoulder, and I think that's important. That's all I can do.

"I wasn't nervous", he said. "He has been playing tremendous golf and I just hope that I have a good day and that he doesn't have his best day".

I never mind laying back at really long odds-on. Royal Melbourne uses the game's most hard greens to require approach shots sufficiently close to the hole to reasonably hope of one putt.
