Donald Trump Welcomes World Series Champion Red Sox to the White House

"I talked to Alex about it", Werner said.

That wasn't the only questionable remark made by the President, however, as Red Sox chairman Tom Werner described a rather awkward conversation he had with the Donald.

"I think I'll be a neutral in this one", joked Trump, a noted Yankees fan who was close friends with the Bronx Bombers' late owner George Steinbrenner. While announcing $448 million in new disaster relief for areas of the Florida panhandle still recovering from Hurricane Michael, the president claimed that Puerto Rico received $91 billion to recover from Hurricane Maria.

"I think the fans are largely behind the players who decided not to go, the fans here in Boston", said Walker.

But once you get by that storyline, there were several gaffes committed by Trump and the White House on Thursday worth noting.

"Unfortunately, we are still struggling, still fighting", Cora said of the situation at home. But all of the team's white players attended.

"A very special group of people", said the Republican president. Cora said he did not "feel comfortable" celebrating at the White House.

Trump has recently disinvited other championship-winning teams from visiting the White House when their players were critical of him, including the Golden State Warriors and the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018.

Members of the team had just come from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where they visited with wounded soldiers, the President said.

The Red Sox stressed that the clubhouse has not been divided on the issue; no player or coach was pressured to go, and players who chose not to attend stressed there would be no ill will toward those who attended. But the Patriots are still working with the White House and still could visit sometime between now and the middle of June.

Cora stressed that he didn't want to make the visit about Puerto Rico.

Those around the Red Sox locker room stressed that a player's decision to attend was a personal choice and not, in many cases, political. There has been no word on if Red Sox players continued the newly-enshrined tradition of dining on fast food during their visit.

Some have publicly shared their reasons for declining the invitation, some have not.
