Disney's new release schedule pushes back Avatar sequels, includes more Star Wars

Disney has announced it will push back its next Star Wars film until 2022 and the next Avatar movie until 2021.

"Avatar 2's" release date has been bumped from December 18, 2020 to December, 17, 2021.

They will hit theatres after "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" brings the Skywalker spin-off saga to a close in December this year. It was meant to be the first of multiple features that Locksmith would produce for Fox (one of Locksmith's co-founders is Elisabeth Murdoch, daughter of former Fox chief Rupert Murdoch), however Disney has not announced any other Locksmith titles beyond this initial film.

The company also has new Star Wars-themed lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World based on a never-before-seen planet to promote. In 2020, Steven Spielberg's 'West Side Story' adaptation will open on December 18, while "Cruella', a live-action "101 Dalmatians' spin-off, will launch on December 23". But based on reports, the upcoming movies will look a lot different from what viewers have come to expect from a Star Wars film-going experience.

The other three sequels will follow every two years, with Avatar 5 completing the five-film series in 2027.

Today, Disney announced that The New Mutants has been given an April 2020 release date. After that, Disney would release another Star Wars film in 2024, and then in 2026. The untitled films in question are part of a new trilogy that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is now working on, dispelling rumors that he abandoned the project entirely.

Cameron, a director who notoriously goes over schedule and over budget, has delayed his movie several times already.

I've been a fan of the series since I was a kid and saw the last three films from the current saga on the night each movie debuted. Disney has no other information on the movies other than they will release every other year on the weekend before Christmas starting in 2022.
