Lakers Threatened To Void Lonzo Ball's Contract Over Unauthorized Surgery

Not only does Pelinka have the backing of Jeanie Buss, but he will also reportedly be leading the search for a new head coach to replace Walton.

Walton mutually parted ways with the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, as the team reeled from the surprising resignation of their President of Basketball Operations, Magic Johnson.

It looks like former Lakers coach Luke Walton won't get unemployed for long.

"We would like to thank Luke for his dedicated service over the last three years", said Pelinka.

Although some wondered if Magic Johnson's abrupt departure from the Lakers might save Walton and his staff, it's clear it did nothing more than maybe buy them an extra day or two.

"This franchise and the city will always be special to me and my family", Walton said in a statement.

- The Sacramento Kings and Luke Walton are moving quickly towards a deal that makes him the team's new head coach, according to ESPN. I'm trying to figure out who's in charge [of the Lakers].

However his position came under scrutiny as the Lakers struggled to challenge for the playoffs in their first season since signing LeBron James.

The team fired head trainer Marco Nuñez on Wednesday.

James missed 17 games with a left groin injury and the Lakers, as a whole, missed a combined 210 games because of injuries, including those to Lonzo Ball (ankle) and Brandon Ingram (blood clot in shoulder) that ended their respective seasons.

Many considered him the unofficial Coach of the Year for his guidance of the then-champion Warriors at the start of the 2015-16 season in place of an ailing Steve Kerr. They're losing somebody who players believe in, players want to play for.

"I'm disappointed for Luke", Kerr said via Anthony Slater.
