Trump attorney pushes back on House panel's request for president's tax returns

An attorney for U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday characterized an effort by the Democratic head of a powerful U.S. House of Representatives committee to obtain six years of the president's tax returns as political harassment and said it flouts "constitutional constraints". Protesters in the area deployed the giant "Trump baby" balloon ahead of the president's visit on Friday.

President Trump is expected around noon Friday.

Trump reiterated that actually closing the border is not now in the cards, but said he will instead impose 25 percent tariffs on auto imports from Mexico if illegal migration and drug smuggling are not controlled.

"This policy chaos, coupled with a sense that the USA government may at some point really shut down the border, has generated an urgency to migrate now while it is still possible", he said.

Since October, ICE had to release 126,000 people, Special Agent in Charge Dave Shaw said at the roundtable with Trump.

A week of heated threats from Donald Trump to close the border means Mexican companies are rushing to send as much cargo into the U.S.as they can, in case of a shutdown that would limit trade.

Trump's new border policy was first announced in a confusing statement to journalists at a White House meeting on the completely unconnected subject of USA urban renewal.

He acted after Congress approved less than he demanded for the wall project.

The President said that his administration has made progress in its push to dub the border situation as "an absolute emergency".

"Ron [Vitiello is] a good man", Trump told reporters.

"Changes in April will be key in understanding any significant change in Mexico's migration enforcement", Ruiz Soto said. And we're going to.

Supply chains are closely integrated between the two countries, particularly in the auto industry. The price of avocados already spiked this week. He estimated that an average of 350,000 Central Americans cross Mexico each year.

The agreement is pending congressional approval.

It was unclear how such tariffs would fit into the countries´ deeply intertwined trading relationship, which is governed by NAFTA, a free trade accord also including Canada that is due to be replaced by an updated version called the USMCA.

Trump has also sparred with Congress on border security and is calling on lawmakers to revamp what he calls the worst immigration laws in the world.

Trump also downplayed the claims of people seeking asylum at the border, declaring without evidence that many were gang members while comparing some of their efforts to find safety in the USA to the special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

In February, he declared a national emergency to fund the construction of a border wall, after causing a 35-day government shutdown, the longest in USA history, in a failed bid to get Congress to allocate the money.

But many Democrats, reluctant to concede to the president on his signature issue and determined to take a hard line in opposition, have persistently questioned whether it constitutes the "national emergency" that Trump has declared.
