Assange 'Will Be' Arrested in 'Hours to Days,' WikiLeaks Says

It said President Moreno was attempting to cover up activities related to his use of an offshore tax haven created by his brother, known as the INA Papers.

Mr Assange has remained at the embassy as he fears being extradited to the USA to face charges over the WikiLeaks website's release of sensitive U.S. government files. Jennifer Robinson, a lawyer for Assange, declined to immediately comment.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been cooped up in the embassy in the British capital for seven years after claiming asylum.

Moreno accused WikiLeaks of intercepting phone calls and private conversations as well as "photos of my bedroom, what I eat, and how my wife and daughters and friends dance".

After a couple of years of legal battles, United Kingdom courts rule Assange should be extradited to Sweden and the Wikileaks founder enters the Ecuadorian embassy seeking political asylum, which is granted.

"Mr. Assange has violated the agreement we reached with him and his legal counsel too many times", Moreno said in the interview in the city of Guayaquil.

The WikiLeaks founder sought the protection of Ecuador in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced rape allegations, or the US, where he could be punished for publishing secret government documents.

He added: "Assange can not lie or, much less, hack into private accounts or private phones".

Sweden dropped the case in 2017 but Mr Assange remains in the embassy following accusations of espionage. It's possible he could also face charges in Britain for violating bail conditions, plus he could end up extradited to the USA and charged for publishing sensitive government documents.

Relations between Mr Assange and Ecuador have grown increasingly prickly as the years have dragged on, and the Australian has faced increasing pressure to leave the embassy in recent months.

Ecuador a year ago established new rules for Assange's behavior while in the embassy, which required him to pay his medical bills and clean up after his pet cat.

But a judge rejected his request to loosen the new living requirements, and among other stipulations, Assange was warned that if he did not properly feed and take care of his cat, the animal could be sent to the pound. Assange, who was granted asylum by Ecuador in 2012, lost local and worldwide legal challenges against the protocol.

The leftist Ecuadorian government that offered asylum to Assange had been embroiled in a diplomatic row with the USA involving a leaked United States diplomatic cable.

The US wants Assange after Wikileaks hacked documents on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
