Apple is launching subscription service for mobile and desktop games

News+ was the only service at the show for which we received a price point: its monthly subscription will cost $9.99, and Apple was quick to tout the fact that individual subscriptions to the same number of magazines would cost thousands of dollars a year. The new Apple AirPods is powered by the new H1 chip which offers faster wireless connectivity and better battery life. While Apple is clearly building up a robust library of original series with which to launch its service (at least, presumably), there's still a question of who they might partner with to build up a back catalogue of older movies and TV shows.

Publishers have struggled over the past few years as the targeted ad platforms of Google and Facebook have taken away numerous ad dollars that would normally be spent on advertising in magazines or on content websites.

Apple said advertisers would not be able to track the activity of subscribers to the new service, thereby ensuring greater privacy.

The Apple TV app will be available on Samsung smart TVs beginning this spring and on Amazon Fire TV, LG, Roku, Sony and VIZIO platforms in the future.

Apple also introduced a credit card, a video game arcade, and added hundreds of magazines to its news app at an event at its Cupertino, California, headquarters. Apple showed off a backdrop full of creators now making exclusives for Apple TV Plus.

And why Apple? "The Apple platform allows me to do what I do in a whole new way, to take everything I've learned about connecting to people, to the next level".

Depending on the games made available as part of such service, it could end up being the biggest start of Apple event.

You will access all of this content through the brand new Apple TV app, which according to Apple now "personalizes what viewers love to watch across their existing apps and services while developing a secure and comprehensive understanding of users viewing interests". The company says more information will be available this fall.

Not content to simply be a publisher, Apple is also looking to help fund games that are released through its service. CEO Tim Cook, meanwhile, said on Apple's fourth-quarter 2018 earnings call last November the company would stop reporting iPhone, iPad, and Mac unit sales.

During Monday's event, Apple also lifted the curtain on a television and movie streaming service, introduced updates to its payment system, and launched a games arcade. However, Apple also said Apple Arcade titles could also be played offline without an internet connection.

Ahead of the launch, Apple negotiated deals that would let Apple bundle and sell networks at a discount, replicating a business model from the cable TV industry, one source familiar with the matter said.

Google has one, Microsoft is making one, and there are countless others presumably on the way.
