May wins UK Parliament's backing for Brexit delay plan

But she had to change her stance when the House backed a proposal from Labour's Yvette Cooper that the wording should be altered to reject a no-deal completely. May said she'll offer a free vote, meaning the government will not whip Conservative lawmakers to take a particular side. But it passed by 321 votes to 278 - a majority of 43. On Wednesday, a dozen government ministers abstained rather than support May's bid to keep a no-deal Brexit as an option, while another voted against, and resigned.

Steve Baker, leading member of the European Research Group (ERG) of Tory MPs, branded the situation a "fiasco".

However, if parliament doesn't get behind that, the good news is that there won't be a no-deal Brexit outcome by 29 March.

Mrs May will look to break the Brexit deadlock by resubmitting her beleaguered deal to MPs as early as Monday or Tuesday next week. This would require extending Article 50 - the notification that Britain is leaving the EU.

But the only deal on the table right now is the same one MPs rejected on Tuesday.

Environment minister Michael Gove had to speak on Mrs May's behalf before the votes because her voice was so croaky.

He said: "Today I reiterate my conviction that a deal can be agreed based on our alternative plan that can command support across the House".

'These are about the choices this House faces. The options before us are the same as they always have been'. Ahead of the United Kingdom parliament meeting, investors look to macro data updates for short term profit opportunities.

A Downing Street source said the Prime Minister had not discussed resigning.

Unfortunately, if you're not quite fluent in British parliamentary proceedings, it can be extremely hard to keep up with Brexit.

"I fully expect the Labour Party to feel the heat and to get round to backing it next week".

Following the vote the Prime Minister, who struggled through a dramatic day at Westminster with a fading voice, challenged the Commons to say what sort of Brexit it wanted.

"Most important thing for us in Ireland is that their decision to leave shouldn't cause problems in Northern Ireland where people voted to stay", he said. But David Lidington did announce at the despatch box earlier today that the government will facilitate indicative voting after the European Union summit if MPs have not agreed a deal before that point.

He added that he would like to see a trade deal between the European Union and the US.

Anti-Brexit supporters are also buoyed, believing that the failure of May's deal and MP's rejection of a no-deal exit brings the country a step closer to a second referendum or to stopping Brexit entirely. Trump said the February deal "strengthened" the relationship between the two countries and said that trade would be increased "very, very substantially" over time. The EU is prepared for both.

The Labour leadership had a "constructive" meeting with backbench MPs Peter Kyle and Phil Wilson - who have put forward a plan to back Theresa May's deal on the condition it is put to a referendum. They were work and pensions secretary Amber Rudd, business secretary Greg Clark, scottish secretary David Mundell and justice secretary David Gauke.

You might think, after months of division, infighting and uncertainty that surely, surely, this means everything will go smoothly from here.
