Democrats split over resolution condemning anti-Semitism aimed at newcomer Ilhan Omar

House Republicans are criticizing Democratic leadership on Thursday for their handling of the ongoing accusations of anti-Semitism levied against Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar.

Some Democrats hugged Omar during the meeting, according to other officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "What we're against is hate, prejudice, bigotry, white supremacy, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism". The alternative is scarier, that they either agree with Omar on the merits or see enough support for her views among their own constituents that they feel obliged to try to defeat a resolution aimed at her.

Omar ruffled feathers with comments she made regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict and the "dual loyalty" she feels like members of Congress have to Israel.

James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, called the House Democrats' behaviour "shameful", and proof that they did not listen to what Omar said during the event, a video of which is available online. On Monday, she was met with a petition from a group of leading Jewish organizations to have her removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Nevertheless, if you thought the House Democrat leadership, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, would actually examine the situation and try to understand what Omar was saying, and at least consider that her detractors were operating in bad faith, you'd be woefully wrong. Democrats chose to add a provision also condemning anti-Muslim behavior, but it's not clear whether the measure will receive a floor vote. The resolution is not expected to call out Omar by name. People are "looking for ways to take her down". Jewish members, however, appear to have voiced their support for the resolution, while others vented their frustration at Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Corte (D-NY), one of Omar's few defenders, for targeting fellow Democrats on Twitter.

Pelosi made reference to an episode last week where a sign was posted at an event hosted by the West Virginia Republican Party falsely linking Omar with the 9/11 attacks: "That is outside the circle of official or civilized behavior on their part, and we can not give them grist for it".

Two knowledgeable people said Hayes was engaged in conversation with a colleague when Pelosi asked Hayes a question.

The vote on the House resolution condemning anti-Semitism following Rep. Ilhan Omar's (D-Minn.) controversial comments regarding Israel has been pushed from its original Wednesday date in light of growing pressure from some Democratic politicians and outside progressive groups, Politico reported Tuesday. "She said foreign affairs committee is writing it", he added.

When she was asked to clarify who is paying members, she cited AIPAC, which has previously boasted about its financial influence in USA politics. Then something interesting happened-among progressive groups (Muslim, Jewish, and unaffiliated alike), across media, and even to some extent in the halls of Congress, progressive voices grew louder in their defense of Omar.

At one point during the meeting, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., a close Pelosi ally, pleaded with Democrats: "Everyone stop tweeting!". To question someone's loyalty because they're Jewish, I think, is bad.
