China's Xiaomi unveils 5G smartphone for US$680

The new Xiaomi phone is touted to be "one of the world's first commercially available 5G smartphones". The modem is claimed to enable 2Gbps+ peak download speed on a 5G network.

At its MWC 2019's event, Xiaomi stated that the Mi 9 will carry a starting price tag of European Union 449 (about RM 2074) for the 6GB/64GB variant while the 6GB/128GB version starts at European Union 499 (~RM 2304). Backed by a 3100mAh battery, the Mi Mix 3 5G offers dual cameras on both front and back. The company is also having 5G partnerships with Three, Orange, Sunrise, Telefonica, TIM, Vodafone, with more coming soon.

The original Mix 3 was first announced in China in late 2018, but the new model gains a number of changes to bring it more in line with the 2019 flagship phones. Moreover, the Mi Mix 3 5G will go on sale starting May this year through Authorised Mi Stores, Mi.com, and select retail channels.

Xiaomi launched their Mi Mix 3 5G today at a MWC 2019 press event, aiming to build on their 4th-placed ranking on IDC's global smartphone market share tracker.

The Mi 9 is available in Spain, France and Italy for pre-order now; it will show up in stores on February 28.

The Mi Mix 3 5G is touted to continue the Mi Mix 3 legacy, including the ceramic body and the slider mechanism. The handset also gets a dedicated Game Turbo for gaming and fifth-generation optical in-display fingerprint scanner for security. The company's latest flagship phone, the Mi 9 boasts not just of the latest specs but also of a triple AI camera, one of which is a whopping 48 megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor.

Xiaomi has worked on developing 5G solutions since May 2016 by establishing a team to take a deep dive on 5G standards and to start exploratory research. The Mi 9 will be available in two variants, 6GB RAM with 64GB of storage, and 6GB RAM with 128GB storage. We knew about the existence of this smartphone already, following its announcement in China, but now Xiaomi is releasing the 5G device globally.
