Four Indian soldiers killed in battle with Kashmir militants

A Major and three soldiers besides a civilian were also killed in the fighting which erupted overnight Sunday barely 10 km from the spot where the suicide bombing took place on the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

This comes after a horrific terrorist attack, for which Pakistan-based and backed Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has claimed responsibility, on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama claimed the lives of around 40 CRPF personnel on 14 February.

SRINAGAR, India - Four Indian soldiers and a civilian were killed in a gun battle in disputed Kashmir on Monday, a police official said, as India launched a hunt for suspected members of an Islamist militant group that killed 44 Indian paramilitary police last week. Several cricket fans and a sport official have called on India to boycott a World Cup match against Pakistan in June, while the Cricket Club of India has covered up a portrait of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan - himself a former cricketer - at its Mumbai office.

Blaming Pakistan and China could also disrupt the anti-terrorism efforts under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which admitted New Delhi and Islamabad in 2017, the Global Times said.

The Pakistan-based Islamist militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) claimed responsibility soon after a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a bus carrying police personnel.

India has demanded that Pakistan should take immediate and verifiable action against terrorists and terror groups operating from territories under its control to create a conducive atmosphere in the region, free of terror.

Meanwhile, Pakistan put its troops along the LoC and the WB on "high alert" to deal with any "misadventure" from across the border in the wake of Thursday's deadly attack in Indian-Occupied Kashmir, officials here said.

The attack has fuelled tensions between India and Pakistan, and led to a backlash against some Kashmiris living in other parts of India. Separately, Indian authorities claimed to have "incontrovertible evidence" of Pakistan's direct involvement and pledged a harsh response.

"Among the slain soldiers is a top army officer", he added.

The Thursday bomb attack has sparked outrage in India with calls for revenge circulating on social media, and rising animosity towards Kashmiri Muslims in other parts of the Hindu-majority country.

They said a search was under way to track the militants, but the fate of the attackers was not immediately known.

As the bodies of the policemen killed in the first attack were returned to families across India at the weekend, Kashmiris faced evictions, job suspensions and attacks online.
