PARADISE LOST: Maduro Warns Trump of 'ANOTHER VIETNAM' as Venezuela Crumbles

On Tuesday, Maduro announced he would beef up the nation's defense by expanding Venezuela's civilian armed militia to 2 million members amid escalating tensions with the U.S.

"I am carrying out my duties as commander-in-chief according to the Constitution consolidating the national Bolivarian armed forces", he said.

Last week the oil-rich but economically devastated Latin American country was plunged into uncertainty when the USA -backed opposition leader Guaido proclaimed himself "acting president".

Earlier this week, the United States slapped oil sanctions on Maduro's regime in an attempt to starve the government of its funding.

Two journalists with television experience said the the video appeared to use "green screen" or some other effect to make Maduro appear to be in the courtyard of the Miraflores Presidential Palace. "We have a good system of defence in place and moreover, we have more significant protection this is protection from God who will give me a long life", Maduro added.

The U.S.is hitting Venezuela's state-owned oil company with sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Maduro to leave office.

Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek Saab sought a preliminary investigation of Guaido on the basis that he helped foreign countries interfere.

Guaido said outside the National Assembly building that he's aware of personal risks, but added, "Venezuela is set on change, and the world is clearly conscious of what's happening".

In the RIA interview, Maduro reiterated he was ready for talks with the opposition, but rejected as blackmail calls for a snap election.

Citing sources, Reuters reported Wednesday that private military contractors who conduct secret mission for Russian Federation were in Venezuela.

"We need more sanctions from the EU", Guaido said in an interview with German daily Bild.

Regarding the investigation and possible arrest of Guaido, he said: "As far as I know, this measure has not yet been taken".

Last week, the United States recognized Guaidó as the rightful interim president and leader of the South American country, and 26 other countries soon followed.

Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido takes part in a protest against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government in Caracas, Venezuela January 30, 2019.

In a Twitter post, Guaido said Trump reaffirmed his support for "our democratic work, commitment to humanitarian aid and recognition of his administration to our presidency".

Colville said more than 40 people were believed to have been killed "in different manners" in the recent protests, including 11 people reportedly killed by "unidentified individuals" linked to incidents of looting.

"I want to send a message to the people of the United States to alert them of the campaign, the media, communications, and psychological war developing in global media and particularly the communications platforms in the United States against Venezuela", Maduro said.

He moved forward with building a transition government on Tuesday, naming almost a dozen new diplomats to nations that have recognized him as interim president.

The military high command remains loyal to Maduro but Guaido has tried to convince the rank and file to switch sides.
