Louis officer charged after deadly game with revolver

A St. Louis police officer has been charged with manslaughter in the death of another officer, allegedly by shooting her during a game of Russian roulette.

Nathaniel Hendren was charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action.

Officer Katlyn Alix, a 24-year-old military veteran, was killed at an officer's home during a fatal game of Russian roulette.

A probable cause statement claims Hendren and Alix instead aimed the weapon at each other after he "produced a revolver". Hendren emptied the revolver and then put one round back into the cylinder. "The gun did not fire at this point. the victim took the gun and then pointed the gun at the defendant and pulled the trigger".

She took the gun and pointed it at Hendren, but again the gun did not fire.

But it is alleged Hendren then returned the gesture, receiving then aiming the weapon at Alix and triggered what proved to be the deadly blow to the chest. She later died at a hospital. He said he nearly left because he didn't want anything to do with it, but he heard a shot. One of the two male officers involved in the shooting issued an "officer in need of aid" plea as they raced to the hospital with Alix in the back of their vehicle.

"She always told me, 'Mom, if I die, it's doing something I love to do, ' " Aimee Chadwick, her mother, told KMOV. The gun went off, wounding Alix fatally, police say.

In a statement, Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner called Alix's death "a tragic situation".

"Officer Alix was an enthusiastic and energetic young woman", police Chief John Hayden wrote on Twitter Thursday via the St. Louis Police Department. According to the probable cause statement, he advised Alix and Hendren they shouldn't be playing with guns and left the room.

At the hospital, Hendren hit a police SUV parked nearby, which broke the back windshield, suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized, sources told the Post-Dispatch, but the police department refused to confirm that Henderson was hospitalized or give any details on how the SUV's windshield was shattered.

St. Louis police said the charges were the result of a promise Hayden made to Alix's family to conduct a "thorough and competent investigation".

Alix's friends described her to local media as a nails-tough fitness buff who excelled as a police officer.

Police tape remains at the scene of a shooting in St. Louis on Thursday.

'Today, much as it saddens my staff and me to file these charges, Katlyn and her family deserve accountability and justice, ' Gardner said.

Alix, who was a married military veteran, graduated from the St Louis Police Academy in January 2017.
