Taiwan's Hsieh outlasted by Japan's Osaka at Australian Open

Osaka said she'd have to regroup quickly for her fourth-round match against No. 13 Anastasija Sevastova, who she beat in three sets in the Brisbane International quarterfinals in the first week of the season.

As the second week of the opening Grand Slam of the year got underway, fourth seed Osaka was still standing after emerging from an error-strewn first set against crafty Latvian Anastasija Sevastova to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Elina Svitolina recovered after dropping the second set to secure a place in the Australian Open quarter-finals with a 6-2 1-6 6-1 victory over American Madison Keys on Monday.

Coming off a win at the WTA Finals, Svitolina is aiming to do what Caroline Wozniacki did past year and follow up a title at the season-ending championship with a breakthrough major in Australia.

Serena Williams crushed Ukrainian teenager Dayana Yastremska 6-2, 6-1 before consoling her at the net as she burst into tears.

Osaka's win equals her best performance at the Australian Open, where she reached the last 16 in 2018 but lost to world No. 1 Simona Halep.

"It was a great fight today, I think for both of us", Svitolina said.

Revealing that she was inspired after seeing her mates from the "Kids Club" at Australian do well, Osaka said she was happy about the fact that she didn't give up after conceding the first set against Sevastova.

"It was a really intense match, and it was some incredible points", said Williams, who improved to 9-1 against Halep and now meets 2016 U.S. Open runner-up Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals.

She reached an Australian Open quarterfinal for the second straight year.

"I knew that I had to be strong mentally and physically in that point, because the sun was very strong in that side, and I knew that I'm going to have a chance on the next game on her serve", Svitolina added. "Anything that I can do to stay here a bit longer I try to do", she said.

The victor will face either US Open champ Naomi Osaka or World No. 13 Anastasija Sevastova in the quarterfinals. She broke Keys' serve at the first opportunity in the next game and finished off the match quickly. Sevastova beat No. 21 Wang Qiang 6-3, 6-3.

"I personally think she was making it a bigger deal than it had to be".

Osaka will hope to erase the Hsieh match from mind by then, having been hopelessly outpointed for the best part of two sets by a player whose unorthodox game regularly troubles the Tour's top names.
