Trump administration eyes disaster money to fund border wall

Trump is demanding billions for his wall that Democrats won't give him.

Pelosi has not said how House Democrats would respond to Trump declaring a national emergency, but she predicted a bipartisan rejection of an attempt by the White House to skirt Congress's power.

Sen. Lindsey Graham is encouraging President Trump to move forward with declaring an emergency to build the wall, saying that "Democrats are not working in good faith with you". The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly.

Visiting a border patrol station in McAllen, Trump viewed tables piled with weapons and narcotics.

President Donald Trump is edging closer to declaring a national emergency to pay for his long-promised U.S. -Mexico border wall as pressure mounts to end the three-week impasse that has closed parts of the government and deprived hundreds of thousands of workers of their salaries. Trump has signaled he would refuse to sign any spending bills that didn't include $5.7 billion for the border wall.

Graham's comment came hours after congressional negotiations on border security and re-opening the government broke down once again. The funding was allocated to the Army Corps of Engineers back in a February 2018 but never spent.

The White House has said the president's trip is created to allow him to meet with those individuals who are "on the front lines" of what they have called a "national security and humanitarian crisis". Like almost all drugs trafficked across the border, they were intercepted by agents at official ports of entry, he was told, and not in the remote areas where he wants to extend tall barriers.

He argued that the US can't solve the problem without a "very substantial barrier" along the border, but offered exaggerations about the effectiveness of border walls and current apprehensions of those crossing illegally.

Regardless of where the money is found, an emergency declaration would draw immediate legal challenge from Democrats, who have accused Trump of trying to manufacture a crisis at the southern border to justify his wall.

On Wednesday, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer met with Trump, but the meeting ended quickly after Trump walked out because the Democratic leaders did not compromise on funding for the border wall.

President Trump announced the cancellation of his upcoming trip to the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, due to the partial government shutdown.
