Walton: Lakers needs 'more passion' from Ball, Ingram

The Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks meet Monday in National Basketball Association action at the American Airlines Center.

Michael Beasley #11, LeBron James #23 and Moritz Wagner #15 of the Los Angeles Lakers react to a Laker goaltending behind Mario Hezonja #8 of the New York Knicks during a 119-112 Knicks win at Staples Center on January 04, 2019 in Los Angeles, California.

The team's most recent struggles manifested itself in Minnesota, where Los Angeles trailed by as many as 11 points midway through the first quarter. He is averaging 27.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.1 assists in 34.6 minutes per game this season. The Los Angeles Lakers are allowing 34.7 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 46.8 rebounds per game.

The Lakers made a concerted effort to hold onto Ingram over the offseason instead of trading him for an established star like Kawhi Leonard.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said a lack of ball movement has slowed the team in its losses this season, and on Monday, they had only 12 assists for a team that averages nearly 23 a game. During the six-game stretch he's shooting 42.2 percent from the field and 23.1 percent from beyond the arc with more turnovers (21) than assists (20) and almost as many shots (102) as points (111). Wesley Matthews is the third double-digit scorer and Dennis Smith Jr.is dishing four assists.

The cold-shooting Dallas Mavericks provided it. The public betting for this game now has 67 percent going on the Mavericks at home.

Eventually, the high energy level wore down the Mavericks and the team outscored Dallas 32-13 in the third period to overturn the deficit and take a lead into the fourth. The Lakers are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Dallas.

The Mavericks rim protector DeAndre Jordan wanted no part of the highlight, stepping away at the last moment and allowing Ball to finish the dunk easily.

Los Angeles Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma will undergo an MRI on his lower back Thursday after suffering a contusion during Wednesday night's loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder, coach Luke Walton told reporters after the game. The Mavericks fell to 15-4 at home. Without LeBron and Kuzma yet again, the Mavs and the reasonable chalk makes sense.
