Slightly Mad Studios is working on a stand alone console

In a weird start to the New Year, Slightly Mad Studios CEO Ian Bell Tweeted the company's plans to release a standalone home console called the "Mad Box".

The studio behind Project Cars said "The Mad Box" console will deliver 4K visuals and high-performance VR to users.

Speaking to Variety Bell elaborated, with the rather disappointing revelation that the console is planned to ship in around three years' time. He also compared the specs of the Mad Box to "equivalent to a 'very fast PC 2 years from now'". He explained that it would be a standalone console, like the PS4 and Xbox One, and will be compatible with most VR headsets on the market.

"What is the Mad Box?".

At the moment, The Mad Box is quite a ways off from release.

In a unusual twist of fate, Slightly Mad Studios is making a games console aimed at the 4K gaming market.

The Mad Box will be a worldwide console, and rather than going the crowdfunding route, apparently Slightly Mad Studios has already recruited "multiple investors" that the team is looking into for the "best offers".

Sadly, Bell has not been forthcoming on technical details, including internal hardware, project launch date, and pricing - though if he's serious about hitting 120 frames per second for high-quality virtual reality in a compact console-like form factor, the pricing will be considerably above the competition.

"You want 4k, you want VR at 60fps? As of now we have no plans to pay developers "incentives" to exclude other hardware vendors". This engine was used for both of the Project CARS games. Gamers have been burned before with new console announcements, so we'll keep a close eye on this one if it does indeed ever come out of the concept and production stage.

According to Bell, the Mad Box is still in pre-production, with Slightly Mad Studios now hashing out production and other logistics with multiple potential partners. Bell also said that early design builds of the console will be revealed in four to six weeks.

As for funding this venture, Bell stated that Slight Mad is in talks with several interested parties.
