China release detained Canadian women

On Saturday, a Chinese court will hear an appeal in the case of a Canadian citizen held on drugs charges, that could further test the tense relations between the two countries.

At the appeal hearing yesterday, prosecutors said the sentence was too light and improper, arguing that Schellenberg was highly likely to have been part of an worldwide drug-smuggling operation and had played a major role in smuggling the drugs, the statement said.

The court said it accepted this argument and ordered a retrial - it also added that Canadian diplomats were in court for the appeal.

It's not clear yet who is representing Schellenberg or when the retrial may take place.

Global Affairs Canada Department confirmed that their citizen had been released, but did not name the person.

Michael Kovrig, left, and Michael Spavor are the two Canadians detained by Chinese authorities following the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Canada.

Global Affairs Canada declined to provide any further information about McIver's return to Canada.

Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer for Huawei, was arrested in Vancouver on December 1 on behalf of the United States, which is seeking her extradition over alleged violations of US trade sanctions on Iran.

Meng was released on bail in Vancouver earlier this month and faces charges in the United States for violating Iranian sanctions.

Ms. McIver's arrest was treated by Canadian and Chinese authorities as a routine matter - unlike the arrests of Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor this month on suspicion of "engaging in activities that endanger" China's national security, according to Beijing.

According to previous reporting from Global News, McIver received an administrative penalty for illegal employment, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a daily news briefing. Schellenberg had appealed after the verdict.

McIver said her niece like to travel and had been to China before, but only as a tourist.

"I would refer you to the competent authority for specifics".

Drugs offences are routinely punished severely in China. The last foreigner to be tried for drug smuggling was British national Akmal Shaikh, who was caught in 2007 while smuggling over 4 kilograms of heroin into China.

Both China and Canada say the McIver case has nothing to do with the other arrests.

"I can't see inside the judge's head or what his instructions from the party might be, but this is just not a good time".

A Canadian who was detained in China earlier this month has now been released and is now back home, according to government officials.

She was detained due to a work-permit issue.
