Redskins release D.J. Swearinger after critical comments on defensive coordinator

He added a caption referencing his split with Washington, reading, in part: "I Gave That Organization My Heart And Soul And They Spit In My Face For Giving My Opinion Only To Better The Team!" Right Wrong Or Indifferent I've Found My Peace And Learned From It And I Am So Excited To Go Back To The Sunny Desert Arizona Like I Never Left!

Swearinger, 27, produced 53 tackles, four interceptions, three forced fumbles and a sack over 15 games in 2018.

Swearinger was a second-round pick by the Houston Texans in the 2013 NFL Draft and has played for the Texans, Tampa Buccaneers, Arizona Cardinals and Redskins during his career.

Everyone knew a contender like the Kansas City Chiefs had very little hope for actually getting to claim safety D.J. Swearinger, and on Tuesday it was made official.

Swearinger, who said that he may watch "more film than coaches, "via NFL.com, sounded off on the Redskins after Saturday's game - particularly defensive coordinator Greg Manusky".

Previously, Gruden had said he would discipline Swearinger for his disparaging comments. Swearinger said he asked Gruden why he was released, and the coach didn't give him an answer. That's probably documented. I try to give my insight, but you know, it doesn't work.

Ultimately it may have been off-the-field issues that led to Swearinger's release, but on the field he was putting together another nice season, as stated below by Field Yates of ESPN. Known for his outspokenness, he offered more veiled criticism of Manusky at times earlier this season.

So, with Swearinger officially released, he'll go through the waiver process. He signed a three-year deal with Washington worth $13.5 million with $9 million in guaranteed money in 2017 and was named a Pro Bowl alternate this year.
