Penny Marshall, star of 'Laverne & Shirley,' dies

Penny Marshall was an American actress, director and producer, probably best known for her role as Laverne in the sitcom, "Laverne and Shirley".

Marshall died from complications from diabetes.

Marshall also produced films, including Cinderella Man, and guest-starred in many TV shows (she appeared in Armisen's Portlandia).

She went onto direct "Big", starring Tom Hanks, in 1988.

In 2004, she was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, along with her Laverne & Shirley co-star.

The actress, who starred alongside Cindy Williams in the ABC classic which ran from 1976-1983, passed away Monday night at her home in the Hollywood Hills.

She is survived by her daughter Tracy and five grandchildren. Marshall also directed episodes of According to Jim and United States of Tara.

Her birthday was October 15, 1943. "When she says it about somebody else, you laughed, but when it was you, you didn't laugh so much".

Hanks delivered a great performance in the wistful comedy as a 12-year-old boy whose wish to become an adult is magically granted. We will update this story as more information becomes available. Met her when I was a broke young actor. She had actually tried out for the role of Gloria on All In the Family, losing out to Sally Struthers for the role opposite Reiner. He said, "Why?" "Because she doesn't want me to embarrass the family".

Marshall's early success in a field where few women rose so high made her an inspiration to other aspiring female filmmakers.
