No confidence vote, fresh referendum and ‘no deal — Sunday shows round-up

After May called off the scheduled vote last week amid near-unanimous predictions she would lose, Jeremy Corbyn was due to announce the no-confidence plan in his response to her statement.

May has delayed a crucial vote by MPs on the draft Brexit deal until next month, leaving the political scene in limbo.

A Labour source has indicated the motion would be targeted at Mrs May personally, rather than the Government.

Ms Rudd told reporters that she hoped the Prime Minister's deal would be supported in the vote expected in January.

The Prime Minister addressed the House of Commons this afternoon, telling MPs the pulled meaningful vote will be rescheduled for the New Year.

Five other Cabinet ministers including Philip Hammond and Amber Rudd are also said to be pushing Mrs May to hold a series of "indicative votes" in the Commons.

The UK government is preparing to spend up to £2bn on Brexit measures in the coming weeks as it looks increasingly likely that Britain will crash out of the European Union without a deal on future trading arrangements. "We've had the people's vote, we've had the referendum and now we've got to get on with implementing it".

"Another vote which would do irreparable damage to the integrity our politics, because it would say to millions who trusted in democracy, that our democracy does not deliver".

Over the weekend, the Prime Minister attacked Tony Blair for backing a so-called "People's Vote" during a visit to Brussels.

He told her: "A responsible prime minister would for the good of this country put this deal before the House this week so we could move on from this Government's disastrous negotiation".

Labour has repeatedly said it will call such a motion at "the best time", or when it knows it can win, and for now will try to force the government to bring its deal to parliament sooner.

"Let us not break faith with the British people by trying to stage another referendum", May will tell lawmakers, according to extracts of her statement released in advance.

Whilst talk of a second poll has until now remained confined to backroom discussions, the decision to delay the meaningful vote last Tuesday has emboldened its proponents, who believe that another plebiscite may be the only way out of the current deadlock.

She has previously suggested that a Norway-plus deal, with the United Kingdom in both a customs union and the single market, could be a "plausible" alternative.

Mrs May made an empathic plea to MPs, saying the European Union had given her legal assurances over the backstop agreement, which MPs opposition to has left her deal hanging by a thread.

Trade minister Liam Fox also said a second referendum would "perpetuate" the deep divisions in Britain, adding that the prime minister was securing the necessary assurances to persuade parliament to back her deal.
