Urban Meyer stepping down at Ohio State, Ryan Day to take over

Meyer has compiled an 82-9 record in seven seasons with the Buckeyes.

Is the Rose Bowl set to be Urban Meyer's final game as a college football head coach?

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer will retire after the Rose Bowl, the university announced.

A press conference is scheduled for this afternoon.

This had been talked about since the beginning of the season, in the wake of Meyer's 3-game suspension and the recent diagnosis of the worsening of a cyst on Meyer's brain that causes painful headaches.

New North Carolina coach Mack Brown, who spoke with Meyer this morning, told CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd that Meyer's health was a primary concern. He has three national championships on his resume - one at Ohio State in 2014 and two at Florida in 2006 and 2008 - to go along with two undefeated seasons (2004 at Utah, 2012 at Ohio State). Meyer said his decision had to come before the December 19 signing day.

His hiring at Florida in 2005 is viewed as one of the most impactful in college football history.

Smith was a sophomore football player at Notre Dame when Ara Parseghian left coaching at the age of 51 and never returned. Meyer recorded his second ideal 12-0 season. Investigators said they found Meyer protected the ex-wide receivers coach for years during allegations of domestic violence, a drug problem and poor job performance. The Buckeyes also won the Big Ten championship this season, beating Northwestern on Saturday.

Meyer acknowledged the investigation was among the reasons for his decision: "The decision was the result of cumulative events".

Smith said the university did not do a nationwide search, emphasizing stability and consistency.

Both the 54-year-old Meyer's exit and Day's hiring are 180-degree opposites of the situation when Meyer was hired in 2011. If Kelly gets the itch to pursue the National Football League in the next two years, Notre Dame's first call would be to Meyer to see if he would be interested and if his health would allow it. He is an Ohio State guy. So does Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith.

Ohio State had a stretch of five straight wins this season, including a rout of archrival MI that gave the Buckeyes another division title and a win over Northwestern for the Big Ten championship. Without Meyer on the sideline in 2019, just Saban, Clemson's Dabo Swinney and Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher can call themselves title-winning coaches while out on the recruiting trail.

It appeared to be a dream job for the Toledo native. The Gators finished in the top 15 of the AP Top 25 in his first four seasons.

In April, Ohio State announced Meyer had signed a two-year contract extension that would keep him at the helm through 2022.
