G20 members agree on trade, migration - but not climate change

As the professor explained, the trade war, among other things, "affected investors' confidence on China's economic future", while US President Donald Trump "faces re-election challenge in less than two years" and "is eager to score points on economy".

Beijing, too, will hold off on escalating in the meantime with retaliatory action, working instead to purchase what the White House has said will be a "very substantial" amount of U.S. goods in the agricultural, energy, and industrial sectors. The planned tariff increase would be paused in the meantime, but she stressed the tariffs will be raised to 25 percent at the end of 90 days if "the parties are unable to reach an agreement".

China's refusal to approve the deal upended the global expansion plans of a premier American company and showcased Beijing's ability to make the USA feel financial pain in ways other than tariffs. If talks do not produce results, the 25 per cent additional tariffs will go into force after 90 days.

They had a meeting during the Group of 20 summit of rich and developing nations being held in Argentina.

"China's response today to President Trump is precisely the action our Congressional delegation asked for, and I am grateful to the Chinese leaders for listening to us and taking this action", said the senator. Trump has also threatened to put tariffs on another $267 billion worth of Chinese imports.

President Trump heralded the meeting as "amazing and productive", saying it brought about "unlimited possibilities for both the United States and China".

Despite months of complaints by the United States and the USA imposing tariffs on about $250 billion worth of Chinese goods, Beijing "has not fundamentally alerted its unfair, unreasonable, and market-distorting practices", according to a report issued last week by Lighthizer.

A statement from White House press secretary Sarah Sanders noted that China has agreed to start purchasing agricultural products from USA farmers "immediately".

"The United States has no proof that most fentanyl in the country comes from China", he said.

The White House said that China would subject fentanyl makers to the "maximum penalty under the law".

Trump also told reporters that he thinks there could be a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in January or February next year.

Earlier the U.S. president said he had postponed a planned press conference "out of respect for the Bush family", following the death of former President George HW Bush, at the age of 94.

The closely watched encounter came shortly after the Group of 20 industrialized nations backed an overhaul of the global body that regulates worldwide trade disputes, marking a victory for Trump, a sharp critic of the organization.

Beyond the staying of further tariff implementation, the second most important outcome of the G20 encounter is that we're now entering another period of protracted uncertainty.

For American farmers, who have suffered since President Donald Trump unleashed tariffs on China, and Beijing hit back with its own tariffs, mostly on American agricultural products, the truce is light at the end of a tunnel of falling profits.

President Xi also stated that he is open to approving the previously unapproved Qualcomm-NXP deal should it again be presented to him.

In their first meeting since November 2017, the two presidents had a profound discussion that lasted for 2.5 hours, much longer than scheduled, Wang said.
