House Dems release letter opposing Pelosi as speaker

Pelosi continues to project confidence that she has the votes to be elected speaker and she is still running unchallenged, though Rep. Marcia Fudge of OH has said she is considering entering the race.

Pelosi allies were quick to jump on the letter Monday as proof that Pelosi will overcome the challenges. It's also possible ― as one Democratic staffer involved in the efforts to dethrone Pelosi theorized ― that Fudge wants to look more deferential as she prepares for a speaker run herself.

For more, please go here. "You know I think that it's important that we have steady leadership right now". "Our majority came on the backs of candidates who said that they would support new leadership because voters in hard-won districts, and across the country, want to see real change in Washington", the letter continues. However, she believes "it's time for a new one". Among the others, three have been declared winners by the Associated Press, and two candidates' election outcomes haven't been called by AP.

The topic of a challenge to Pelosi is a hot one and came up on Fox News Channel's Outnumbered on Monday, during which segment they noted that Pelosi's supporters include non-politicians like tennis star Martina Navratilova.

Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY), who has suggested he'd vote for Pelosi, had to explain his support for her too.

Those opposing Pelosi's candidacy say that this type of whip operation is exactly why they need new leadership, arguing that the new members who campaigned against her are now finding themselves pressured to cast a vote that could ultimately cost them reelection. She has enlisted powerful allies to weigh in on her behalf and worked to build an air of inevitability around her bid, including through a letter of support circulated by a veteran lawmaker, Representative Nita M. Lowey of NY, and signed by 61 Democratic women as of Friday afternoon.

"We promised to change the status quo, and we intend to deliver on that promise", the letter continued. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), who is toying with a speaker run herself, was removed from the letter.

The letter represented the most public - and concrete - action made to deny Pelosi another term as speaker when the Democrats take over in January.

Rep. -elect Abigail Spanberger of Virginia said Sunday on ABC she had "tremendous" respect for Pelosi, who "blazed a trail" for the record number of new women, but would be voting against her. If sixteen Democrats vote against her ... "She'll stand up to a president".

"If we are going to turn a page and bring civility back to the political discussions, we need to change the people who are directing that conversation", she said.

"Leader Pelosi remains confident in her support", said spokesman Drew Hammill.

But making a deal with Republicans to get the votes would also give Republicans effective veto power over a Democratic speaker, and a motion to vacate the chair could theoretically be called at any time.
