Death toll rises to 76 in California fire as Trump visits

- President Donald Trump arrived in California to meet with officials, victims and the "unbelievably brave" firefighters there, as more than 1,000 people remain listed as missing in the worst-ever wildfire to hit the U.S. state. Authorities stressed that the long roster does not mean they believe all those people are missing.

Adding to the misery of Camp Fire survivors, an outbreak of the highly contagious norovirus has been reported at several shelters.

"Prince Philip and I offer our deepest sympathies to the people of California, who continue to suffer from the devastating fires across the state", she wrote.

Paradise was home to almost 27,000 residents before it was largely incinerated by the blaze on the night of November 8.

A second blaze in Southern California called the Woolsey Fire started northwest of Los Angeles also on 8 November and has been moving toward the Pacific Coast.

The tally of unaccounted-for individuals rose to 1,276, Honea said, while asking the public to check the list to see if their names are on it.

Trump initially blamed state officials for poor forest management in exacerbating the fires and threatened to cut off federal funding.

"He's got our back", outgoing Gov. But in the face of tragedy, people tend to rise above some of their lesser propensities.

"I think everybody's seen the light", Trump said.

He also suggested California's severe wildfires will make believers of even the most ardent climate change skeptics "in less than five years", and that those living near forests might need to build underground shelters to protect them from fires. Jerry Brown and Gov. -elect Gavin Newsom welcomed Trump's visit, declaring it's time "to pull together for the people of California".

Weather conditions have since turned more to firefighters' favour, though strong, gusty winds and lower humidity were expected to return late on Saturday through early Sunday ahead of rain forecast for mid-week.

More than 5,500 fire personnel were battling the blaze that covered 228 square miles (590 square kilometers) and was halfway contained, officials said. It was 57 percent contained.

Towards the end of Saturday's press conference, Trump was pressed again about the role of climate change, in particular whether or not his view shifted after witnessing miles and miles of Camp Fire carnage first-hand.

The White House schedule said Air Force One was to land at Beale Air Force Base near Sacramento about 12:45 p.m. EST but listed no specific events until his early Sunday return to Washington. "It's hard. I never knew how much I loved my house".

"There have been some back and forth between California leaders and the president". At last count, more than 70 people have been killed and 1000 are missing in the so-called Camp Fire that blazed through Paradise, north of San Francisco - while far to the south, parts of Malibu have also been devastated.

Maggie Missere-Crowder said if Trump came to the Walmart, she would shake his hand, but she otherwise needed to focus on getting her tent and plastic storage boxes with food and other items into her pickup truck.

Roslyn Roberts, 73, forced from her home in Paradise, said she voted for Trump but would disagree with him if she has the chance on Saturday.

The Camp Fire is now the deadliest fire in the United States in a century. The president on Saturday declined to say whether climate change directly impacted the fires, saying there were "a lot of factors" and that seeing the devastation had not changed his opinion on climate change.
