SDC 2018: Samsung Innovating in Folding Phones, IoT, Mobile UX

This phone, which is expected to go into production in Q1 2019, features a tablet-sized screen that can be folded vertically to fit into a pocket or purse (see image at upper left); when opened it has a larger screen than the typical smartphone, offering easier access to apps, images and video.

The device featured two 5.5-inch interoperating displays that were also touch screen.

According to Samsung Exynos' Twitter page, the company plans to show off the new Exynos processor on November 14th.

Samsung debuted its first Android Go smartphone, the Galaxy J2 Core back in August, but the device has yet to be introduced in the United States. Samsung confirmed that One UI will roll out in its stable version early next year, most likely along with the release of Android 9 Pie for the devices. After a lot of buzz around the foldable display that Samsung had been teasing for the last couple of months, it was finally showcased at the event.

Samsung is among a few developers working on foldable phones. This device is on preorder in China and available to developers globally. Moreover, we assume the Infinity Flex Display on the foldable phone will be major battery drainer and the new Exynos chipset should help control that.

In addition, the 7.3-inch screen will be able to split into three active areas at once.

Royole said it would start filling orders in late December.

That's Flipboard's initial vision for its app on Samsung's foldable phone, which the news aggregator shared at Samsung's behest to inspire app developers to make their own programs work on Samsung's foldable phone and future phones, too.

As it turns out, Google's been sort of silently pushing developers to support multi-display app functionality in Android for a while now.

Samsung is also adding five additional languages to Bixby in the coming months - such as British English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
