Florida’s Race For Governor Is In Recount Territory

Republican candidate Ron DeSantis has defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum to become the next governor of Florida.

Gillum conceded victory to DeSantis Tuesday night after narrowly trailing behind. "Our campaign, along with our attorney Barry Richard, is monitoring the situation closely and is ready for an outcome, including a state-mandated recount".

On Wednesday evening, Gillum tweeted that he was "looking forward to seeing every vote counted".

As additional votes were tallied following the general election, DeSantis' lead narrowed to 0.47 percent, according to the most recent unofficial election results from the Florida Division of Elections as of Thursday afternoon. Concession speech or no, Florida law requires an automatic machine recount in any race where the margin of victory is within one half of one percentage point. "Nelson is going to be declared the victor and return to the U.S. Senate", said Marc Elias, a recount attorney hired by the Nelson campaign, in a conference call.

In the state's race for the next agriculture commissioner, Democrat Nikki Fried how now taken the lead over Republican Matt Caldwell.

DeSantis quit his job in Congress to focus on the gubernatorial race, a heated affair that largely reflected the broader national tensions over race and class in the Trump era.

But for now, Republicans maintain their dominance in Florida - even if by the slimmest of margins.

"Part of the reason I bought a house in Orlando in 2006 was to establish a base of permanent residency - to have a place to call home, wherever I might temporarily reside", she wrote.

In yet another misfire at the most steadily misfiring of networks, MSNBC accidentally aired the results of Florida's gubernatorial a race, as Deadline put it, "a wee bit too early" - the night before the election.

Scott and Nelson, meanwhile, have hired lawyers and have demanded information on those who cast provisional ballots on Tuesday. But Democrat Christine Hallquist lost her bid to become the first openly transgender U.S. governor in Vermont, where Republican incumbent Phil Scott won re-election.

The most high-profile recount possibility so far, however, is in the Senate race.

DeSantis, who entered the Governor's race as an underdog, got his most pivotal boost from the commander-in-chief, himself. After its 2000 debacle, the state shifted to electronic voting machines, but later changed again to optical-scan paper ballots, the most reliable technology.

The canvassing boards, which typically consist of the supervisor of elections, a county judge and a county commission member, review the ballots to see if the signature matches the one on file when the voter first registered, and to determine if the voter didn't already vote. "Doing so could be a violation of 101.048 (6), F.S., and Article I, Section 6 of the Florida Constitution [e.g., voters being guaranteed the right to cast a secret ballot]".

"Now, I'm not calling Mr. DeSantis a racist", Gillum said in response.
