A Muslim woman from Detroit has won the congressional seat long held by Democratic Rep. John Conyers, who stepped down amid sexual harassment claims by former staffers.

The United States Congress is the bicameral legislature of the Federal government of the United States.

Omar and Michigan's Rashida Tlaib are also the first Muslim women elected to Congress.

The victories by the two Democrats - Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib - came on an election night when members of multiple minority groups had a chance to score electoral firsts.

They will join a record number of women in Congress. "What I defend is ideas", she said. After the start of the civil war in 1991, she and her family fled Somalia and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. Eventually, she learnt the language by watching television.

"Trump was a bit of a Bat-Signal for women in general of being engaged", she says, talking while out on the campaign trail in Detroit.

Omar has forged a progressive political identity.

Omar made history in 2016 when she was elected the first Somali-American legislator in the U.S. Her election comes during a presidential administration seen as fanning anger against Muslims and enacting anti-Muslim policies.

Both women have served as state lawmakers.

"We need real people who are talking about our issues and know what it feels like", Haaland told AFP in an interview ahead of the elections, in which she ran in New Mexico's 1st congressional district seat. -Palestinian relations under Republican President Donald Trump.

There was no Republican on the ballot in the overwhelmingly Democratic district.
