United States synagogue shooting suspect charged with 44 counts

The indictment charges Bowers with killing 11 people, and for each of those victims, he faces separate counts of obstruction of free exercise of religion resulting in death, and using a firearm to commit murder during a crime of violence.

Bowers was injured during a shootout with police during the massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood in what is believed to be the worst anti-Semitic attack in US history.

Prosecutors say that once inside, Bowers, who had been vocal about his anti-Semitic beliefs on social media, said he was there to "kill Jews".

The Anti-Defamation League, which has tracked hatred and violence against Jews since the 1970s, said the Pittsburgh mayhem was the worst attack against the Jewish community in USA history.

Bowers, who was shot and wounded during a gun battle that injured four police officers, walked into court under his own power, his left arm heavily bandaged. He made his first court appearance Monday. The funerals followed three on Tuesday for other victims and ahead of the remaining five set for later in the week.

Bowers' arraignment came on the same day three more victims of the massacre in Pittsburgh's historically Jewish Squirrel Hill neighborhood were laid to rest.

A conviction on the non-death penalty charges are each punishable by 20 years or life in prison.

"The president was very moved by the visit and his time with the rabbi and called it very humbling and sad", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters.

Funerals for the 11 victims began on Tuesday. Thousands gathered in Squirrel Hill to let Trump know that they didn't want him infringing on their grief as they tried to process the community's painful loss.

Meanwhile, 911 operators who were on duty Saturday morning described how they could hear gunshots and screaming as the rampage unfolded.

As they arrived, a gathering protesters showed up chanting, "President Hate, leave our state!" and "Trump, renounce white nationalism now!"

Protesters also shouted "Leave Pittsburgh, leave Pennsylvania" as Trump and First Lady Melania Trump visited the Tree of Life Synagogue.

Funeral services will be held for 84-year-old Bernice Simon and her husband, 86-year-old Sylvan.

Outside, the Trumps participated in the Jewish custom of placing stones for the dead.

Jared Younger said that when his sister contacted him, he had a feeling it was about his father.

The Pittsburgh massacre also has fuelled a debate over Mr Trump's rhetoric and his self-identification as a "nationalist", which critics say has led to a surge in right-wing extremism and may have helped provoke the synagogue bloodshed.
