Schoolchildren among 18 killed by flash flooding in Jordan | The Cube

Al-Sharaa said 37 middle school students, seven teachers and other visitors were at the hot springs near the Dead Sea on Thursday afternoon, some eating lunch, when they were taken by surprise by the flooding. In April, 10 teenagers died after heavy rain sparked flash flooding south of the Dead Sea.

Rescuers were today searching for survivors of flash flooding at the Dead Sea which killed at least 20 people, a lot of them children on a school trip. Several people are still feared missing, he said.

A dramatic rescue operation involving helicopters and divers continued into the night.

Heavy rains started pouring at around 3:00pm, causing water to come down from the Madaba mountains into the valley where the field trip was taking place. At least 17 are dead; more than 20 were injured.

The Air Force said after midnight that the rescue mission had returned to Israel.

"May we know no more devastating tragedies as these".

Crews were able to rescue at least 34 people from the flash floods, local reports said.

It was reported that Jordanian authorities requested Israeli assistance in the search and rescue effort. The specialists later returned to Israel, though they remained on alert.

Government newspaper Al-Rai carried the headline "Tragedy at the Dead Sea" on its front page, while the private Al-Ghad daily said it was a "Black Day".

Jordan's King Abdullah II canceled a planned working visit to Bahrain, initially scheduled for Friday.

"Currently assisting Jordan in rescuing a bus full of children swept away in a flood on the Jordanian side of the Dead Sea", it wrote on Twitter.

The king ordered the Jordanian flag at the palace's main entrance to fly at half-staff for three days in mourning for the victims of the flood.

The Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth and popular with visitors.

"The students were on a school trip and it appears that a mudslide along the road swept their bus away", the official added.
