World's oldest ever shipwreck is discovered in Black Sea

Archaeologists have discovered an intact ship at the bottom of the Black Sea and have carbon dated it to 500 BC and believe this is the "first time it has been since it was afloat".

The Black Sea has always been an important trade route between Europe and Asia, meaning it's been a hub of activity for countless cultures and civilizations, including the Greeks, Persians, Scythians, Romans, Goths, Huns, Crusaders, and Ottomans, to name but a few.

More than 60 shipwrecks were discovered by the worldwide team of maritime archaeologists with the second oldest being carbon dated to 200 AD.

More than a mile beneath the surface of the Black Sea, shrouded in darkness, an ancient Greek ship sat for millennia unseen by human eyes - until the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project happened upon its watery grave past year.

The ship, laying more than a mile below the surface of the Black Sea, appears to be of the same construction.

"This represents an unbroken pattern of trade and exchange, warfare and communication that reaches back into prehistory, and because of the anoxic conditions of the Black Sea - the lack of oxygen - below a certain depth, some of the wrecks survive in incredible condition, "researchers wrote in a news release".

"This will change our understanding of shipbuilding and seafaring in the ancient world", he said.

Over the course of the past three years The Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (Black Sea MAP) mapped over 2000 sq km (772 sq miles) of the seabed in unprecedented detail using technology previously reserved for the oil and gas extraction industry. Now, according to MAP, they know it also depicts a representation of real trading vessels used around the same era as their find. Organizers plan to screen a two-hour documentary about this latest find at the British Museum. We understand the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Expedition conference will be making some of the data available to the Wellcome Collection in Euston, London, and we've asked it for further info.

"Over 60 shipwrecks, varying in age from a 17th century Cossack raiding fleet, through Roman trading vessels complete with amphorae to a complete ship from the Classical period, were found across the 3 year period", the team wrote in a statement.
