Purdue throttles No. 2 Ohio State to earn shocking upset

Even though two fourth-quarter touchdowns made it look like a closer game than it really was, there was no way to disguise the fact No. 2 Ohio State's 49-20 loss to Purdue on Saturday night was an embarrassment for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State was in the red zone five times against three-loss Purdue and came away with two field goals, and the Buckeyes' defense has allowed 35 plays of 25-plus yards this season - already five more than all of past year.

It converted a 3rd-and-16 on the first drive after J.T. Barrett left the game with a knee injury, and turned the tide in what ended up a 31-20 Ohio State win.

Ohio State lost a game and a receiver during its trip to Purdue last Saturday.

Purdue (4-3, 3-1 Big Ten) is a team on a bit of a roll with four straight wins.

"The glaring shortcomings we have were exposed", Meyer said. The Buckeyes are now ranked 116th in the country in red zone offense.

Week 8 of the season didn't have much shock but it did pack some intrigue with matchups like Michigan vs. Michigan State, Oregon vs. Washington State, LSU vs. Mississippi State, Clemson vs. NC State and Oklahoma vs. TCU.

"Once the field got shorter, it was harder for Ohio State to operate", Palm said. Washington State is the highest-ranked team in the Pac-12.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer on Tuesday denied a report that tension is building between him and athletic director Gene Smith, as well as on the Buckeyes' coaching staff. "We want to be in a position where we can control our own destiny, we don't want to have to be sitting back and waiting to see what somebody else does and we took a step in the right direction".

His biggest game this season was an 84-yard performance against TCU, in a game where he also had several costly drops. It gives Black another week to rest and prepare for Penn State as he could possibly be a full participant in practice next week and be out there. Knox had 128 yards on the night and three touchdowns, two of them in the fourth quarter.

Now comes the hard part - proving the biggest win of Brohm's brief tenure was no fluke.

The bad blood continued after Michigan's 21-7 victory, as Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh called Michigan State's pregame actions, "total bush league". The No. 11 Buckeyes are off this week before hosting Nebraska on November 3, and the extra time will give the staff a chance to try different things. We go down there a few times, two field goals and one missed field goal.
