Former NFL Player, Sacramento Standout Rae Carruth Released From Prison

Carruth, whom prosecutors argued had hired Watkins to kill Adams because he didn't want to pay child support, was found guilty in January 2001 of conspiracy to commit murder, using an instrument with intent to destroy an unborn child and discharging a firearm into occupied property.

But, he threw it all away in November 1999 when he conspired with a gunman to murder 24-year-old Cherica Adams, who was 8 months pregnant with his child. Adams was shot four times while driving her vehicle but managed to make a 911 call that helped implicate Carruth. He was born a month prematurely with cerebral palsy, as a result of injuries sustained in the shooting, according to ESPN. Carruth served 18 years of a proposed 18-24 year bid at the Sampson Correction Institution in North Carolina. "I'm actually some what frightened".

Adams fell into a coma and died less than a month later after the shooting.

The jury's decision kept the death penalty off the table, paving the way for Carruth's 18-to-24-year sentence.

Carruth still claims he wasn't intending to have Adams killed, but has acknowledged a responsibility for what happened to his former girlfriend. So that's what I'd want to change. "I guess, honestly, I just want to truly be forgiven".

Carruth did not speak to reporters before getting into an awaiting white Chevy Tahoe.

Carruth's former attorney, David Rudolf, did not immediately return phone calls Monday seeking comment about Carruth's release and plans. He said he hoped to, "try to be the father that I should have been from day one", but chose to "no longer be pursuing a relationship with Chancellor and Ms. Adams". "And I think this opens the door". "I hope he can have a real relationship with Chancellor going forward".

When you go to the official National Football League online shop and try to personalize a Panthers jersey with Carruth's name and number (89) on the back, you get an error message that says "We are unable to customize this item with the text you have entered".

"Chancellor will be raised either by me, or, after I'm gone, by someone else who loves him and who knows him". Michael Kennedy, who obtained the gun that was used and drove the auto in the drive-by, testified against Carruth and was released in 2011.
