Maradona claims Lionel Messi's toilet habits prevent him from being a leader

The disagreement between Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi seems to be continuing after a member of Messi's family replied the Albiceleste legend recent remarks about the Barcelona playmaker.

The Catalan explained the importance of Messi, arguably the greatest to ever play football and someone who he describes as 'a competitive and fierce animal who hates losing'. "You say to Messi to "throw yourself in head first" but he prefers to play videogames".

Maradona, speaking from the Mexican state of Sinaloa where he coaches local second-tier side Dorados, said Messi's break was sensible. "He is the best in the world along with Cristiano", said Maradona.

After Argentina bowed out in the last 16 to France in this year's World Cup in Russia, Messi chose to take a break from global football, a decision which Maradona supports. He added: "The two times we won the Champions League, we did so with seven players from the academy, like Xavi, Iniesta, Valdes, who joined Barça aged seven or eight".

"For me it's hard to talk, but it's pointless wanting to make a man who goes to the bathroom 20 times before a match into the leader", Maradona further remarked.

"I wouldn't call him up right now, but never say never", he said. "Messi is Messi for Barcelona, but playing in an Argentina shirt he is another Messi".

However, it has been suggested that no new deal would be penned until the 2019-20 campaign at the earliest, leaving the Argentine free to focus on trying to help Barcelona retain their La Liga title.

Messi has always been criticised for failing to reproduce his Barcelona form when he's on worldwide duty, and he hasn't played for Argentina since they exited the World Cup to France at the second round stage.

Argentina beat Iraq 4-0 on Thursday with a new-look side, taking their unbeaten run since Russian Federation to three games.
