The Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has brought thugs into the state to create tension ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primaries.

Atiku Abubakar won on Sunday nearly half the votes cast in a primary race to become the main opposition challenger to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari in next year's elections, party officials said.

Senate President Bukola Saraki's '#GrowNigeria' movement has suffered a great setback as he didn't get the People's Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket.

According to Daily Post, Wike said that the PDP primaries will go smoothly despite APC's plot.

"I wish president Muhammadu Buhari the best in 2019".

Speaking at the PDP Convention, Saraki described the primary election as free and fair, while commending the National working committee of a peaceful exercise.

Mr Abubakar was in 1998 elected Governor of Adamawa State.

The retired general, who headed a military regime in the 1980s, has faced growing pressure to step down because of failing health after spending several months in London previous year treating an undisclosed ailment.

"The fact that nobody came forward to challenge the president is an indication that the party members are satisfied with his performance and they want to see more of him in office", presidential spokesman Garba Shehu told AFP.

The cleric who is a persistent critic of the Buhari administration has also indicated interest to run for the presidency at a year he is yet to disclose.
