KENYA: Melania Trump Laments Elephant Poaching

Later during a visit at the US embassy in Malawi, the first lady called her visit to the school an "amazing experience".

Mrs Trump also visited the Kenya National Threatre where she and Mrs Kenyatta were treated to cultural performances.

Children living at The Nest in Nairobi greeted her with singing and dancing, and it didn't take long before the typically reserved USA first lady gave in to the moment.

But observers were further taken aback by the tone-deaf outfit the first lady wore in Kenya.

She came here without Donald Trump and has managed to avoid some of the more uncomfortable situations that previous visitors have faced: President George W. Bush encountered elephants mating when he embarked on a safari in Botswana in 2018. Then she was encircled by a group of singing kids and danced with them.

Melania Trump is visiting a national park in Kenya to highlight animal conservation efforts. At several points, Mrs. Trump pulled out a pair of green binoculars or her iPhone to take photos and video.

Soon she was petting and stroking the elephants, smiling and laughing and having a good time.

President Donald Trump has sought to roll back the United States foreign aid budget, a move that has been criticised by both Republican and Democratic lawmakers.

And two other white people had a "welcome to Malawi # notashithole!" sign.

Trump at first decried lifting the ban, but he did not intervene in a federal agency decision to begin judging the importation of elephant trophies on a "case-by-case basis". Trump has twice tried unsuccessfully to slash USAID's budget by a third.

She also saw a site of an ivory burn that's meant to discourage poachers. She smiled widely at the sight of a giraffe.

"Thank you for what you do and taking care of them", Trump told the orphanage's staff after learning more about the facility and the circumstances that brought numerous young children and babies to it.

Beyond hosting first ladies at the White House or meeting with them at the United Nations, it is unclear how much Trump knew about Africa before she made a decision to visit.

Melania Trump touched down in Africa for her four-nation tour on Tuesday, and people are pleasantly surprised to see how happy she looks during her first solo global trip as the first lady.
