Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho given vote of confidence by Ed Woodward

Paul Pogba launched a blistering critique of Manchester United's defensive-minded tactics in Saturday's draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, which is likely to infuriate manager Jose Mourinho.

The relationship between Pogba and Mourinho has been under scrutiny for a number of months, and Mourinho's latest action - carried out at Carrington today - is understood to be created to underline his authority at the club.

Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson netted a spectacular strike, containing hints of Ronaldo, for Derby at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.

According to The Times: "A Carrington source said: "Jose told the players that Pogba will not be the captain because he doesn't represent what a captain is and Manchester United is bigger than anyone".

"No fall out. The person who made the decision to be second-captain was also me".

"I am the manager, I can make these decisions, no fall-out at all, no problems at all, just one decision that I don't have to explain".

Pogba has been left out of tonight's squad to face Derby. "When I saw we were coming to the sixth and seventh penalty with Phil Jones and (Eric) Bailly, I knew we were in trouble".

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward says everyone at Manchester United is "working tirelessly" to bring silverware to Old Trafford. "When we play like (that) it's easier for us". When we are at home we should attack, attack, attack.

But things didn't go to plan as the Red Devils were dumped out of the competition 2-1 after Sergio Romero was sent off.

There will be, it seems fair to say, quite a lot of hoopla between Lampard and Mourinho before and after the match. "The feeling I got from it was vast, it's an incredible feeling for me".
