Amazon unveils range of new Echo smart home devices

The new Echo Dot costs the same $49.99.

The whole range is due to be launched later today in Seattle, which sends alarm bells as to whether we'll see them in the United Kingdom in time for Santa as Amazon isn't all about worldwide simultaneous launches.

Finally, there'll be Drop In support, so you can make quick voice calls to an Echo at home. This is something that has previously been impossible to do with Echo devices. You can, for instance, set it up so that Alexa automatically turns on the fan if your living room reaches a certain temperature.

The Echo Input is meant to be plugged into speakers you already own.

Amazon kicked off the smart speaker category in 2014 with the release of its first Echo smart speaker and has dominated it since. It's also been gifted a new mic array for better voice detection. The AmazonBasics Microwave is to pre-order starting today for $59.99 and will start shipping later this year. "The new design features a 10" display (up from 7") and new speaker system for enhanced audio with real-time Dolby processing.

Why a microwave? It's "the most popular appliance that's out there today", according to Amazon, but also "one of the hardest devices to integrate with".

The 12.5cm-tall Input simply connects to an existing speaker via a 3.5mm jack or Bluetooth to gift it voice functionality.

The 100-watt Echo Sub can be wirelessly paired with one Echo speaker for a 1.1 configuration, or with two of the same Echo speakers for a 2.1 set-up, aiming to bring more brunt to a stereo pair through its down-firing 6in woofer.

The Echo Link Amp ($199) and Echo Link ($199) are amplifiers without built-in microphones and Alexa powers.

It's only the beginning for Alexa. In order to record channels, you will need a separate HD tuner, Fire TV streaming media player or Echo Show, as well as something that can access the Fire TV app.

Amazon has revealed its first Alexa product for the vehicle, with the Echo Auto set to add the voice assistant to your dashboard.

The Echo Link and the Echo Link Amp: For those of you with existing in-ceiling speakers or an existing AV set up, Amazon is announcing the Link and Link Amp so you can hear Alexa over those speakers.

Below you can view all of the new products and a rundown of what they do, but a lot was done for Alexa products behind the scenes, too.

Jorrit Van der Meulen, vice president of Amazon devices global, said: "We want you to have access to Alexa everywhere - in your kitchen, in your living room, in your office, and more".
