Kavanaugh says misconduct allegation is 'completely false'

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, told reporters Monday that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh categorically denied allegations that he committed sexual assault at a high school party in the early 1980s - and told the senator he was not at a party similar to what his accuser described. Even if Democrats peel off the one Republican vote to not recommend Kavanaugh to the full Senate, Republicans have another option.

Mr Kavanaugh attended a private school for boys in Maryland while Dr Ford attended a nearby school.

"In view of the enormity and seriousness of these allegations, a staff-only phone call behind closed doors is unacceptable and Democratic staff will not participate".

Republican Rep. Billy Long of Missouri also took to Twitter to mock the accusation, retweeting a message from another user who posted a black-and-white photo of a little boy kissing a little girl on the forehead.

The confirmation fight comes just weeks before the November 6 congressional elections in which Democrats are seeking to take control of Congress from Trump's fellow Republicans.

Among the GOP defectors was Sen.

"I think he's on track, very much on track", Trump said. If that timetable slips, it would become increasingly hard for Republicans to schedule a vote before the November 6 elections. When she tried to call out, he put his hand over her mouth. Neither Collins nor Murkowski faces re-election this fall.

A public hearing, coming as the #MeToo movement has galvanized liberal and female voters and cost prominent men their jobs, would be a politically jarring prelude to November elections for control of Congress. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said Wednesday. She said President George H.W. Bush had asked the FBI to investigate Anita Hill's allegations against Thomas. But Democrats say staff calls are insufficient and want the proceedings postponed so the FBI can investigate.

The Justice Department said in a statement late Monday that the accusation against Kavanaugh "does not involve any potential federal crime". At one point, she says, Mr. Judge jumped on top of both of them, which caused them all to topple off the bed, enabling her to get free.

According to a letter to Grassley from Ford's legal team Tuesday, she has been the target of harassment and death threats, which has led to Ford and her family relocating from their home.

"Trying to rush this through on Thursday is an insult to the women of America and an insult to the majesty of the Supreme Court of the United States", Schumer said.

Now, several Senate Democrats and Republicans say Kavanaugh's confirmation proceedings, which are set to take place this week, should be halted until they can question Ford and Kavanaugh.

In morning television interviews, Ms Katz said her client was willing to tell her story in public to the Senate Judiciary Committee, although no politicians or their aides had yet contacted her.

The announcement comes four days after Republican members, in a committee business meeting, blocked four attempts by Democrats to subpoena the White House for the Kavanaugh documents.

Kavanaugh has completely denied the allegations, as has Mark Judge, a friend of his who Ford said witnessed the assault.

Ford went public with her allegation in an article published by The Washington Post on Sunday.

Ford claimed that Kavanaugh had groped her and tried to take her clothes off during a high school party.

An attorney for Ford said Monday that Ford is willing to testify about the allegations before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Kavanaugh is now a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, widely viewed as the nation's second-most-powerful court. She alleges that Kavanaugh and a friend - both "stumbling drunk" - corralled her into a bedroom during a party.

In a letter sent later, all 10 Democrats on the Judiciary Committee urged Grassley to postpone Thursday's scheduled vote.
