McMaster warns of flood dangers in SC after Hurricane Florence

Tropical Storm Florence lumbered inland on Saturday, knocking down trees, flooding rivers, and dumping sheets of rain in the Carolinas where five people have died.

The first victims of hurricane Florence struck the coast of the USA state of North Carolina, were two people.

"Hurricane Florence is powerful, slow and relentless", he said. "There is probably not a county or a person that will not be affected in some way by this very massive and violent storm".

Authorities have confirmed those storm-related deaths, including a mother and her infant child who died after a tree fell on their home in New Hanover County, where the storm hit Friday morning with a 105 miles per hour wind gust, the strongest wind in the city since 1958.

He got around 15 people to higher ground and the Coast Guard transported some of them to hospital for medical issues. A 78-year-old man was electrocuted attempting to connect extension cords while another man perished when he was blown down by high winds while checking on his hunting dogs, a county spokesman said.

In New Bern, at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent rivers in North Carolina, Florence overwhelmed the town of 30,000, with the downtown area under water. If the water starts to rise again, she says, she'll head upstairs and wait for it to recede again. "You may need to move up to the second story, or to your attic, but WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", the New Bern authorities said on Twitter.

Dan Eudy said he and his brother were awakened on Thursday night by the sound of a boat ramming his front porch.

What the hurricane "has now lost in terms of maximum wind speeds near its center, it has now gained in terms of sheer expansiveness", said Peter Mullinax, a meteorologist at Planalytics.

Officials in the city of Greenville, North Carolina say that flash flooding has begun around their region.

"The storm has never been more risky than it is right now", Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference.

-Intensity: Florence came ashore with top winds of 90 miles per hour (145 kph), below the 111 miles per hour (178 kph) threshold for a "major" hurricane but still extremely risky.

"Trees are blowing down in the wind".

Despite the downgrade the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that "life-threatening storm surges" would continue into the night, predicting "catastrophic freshwater flooding" over parts of North and SC. CoBank ACB, an agricultural lender, estimates damage to North Carolina farming could hit $1 billion before the storm slows.

More than 22,600 people were housed in 150 shelters statewide, including schools, churches and Wake Forest University's basketball arena.

The National Hurricane Center downgraded it to a tropical storm on Friday afternoon, but warned that life-threatening storm surges - in which water is pushed by a storm over land that would normally be dry - and catastrophic freshwater flooding were still expected.

North Carolina corrections officials said more than 3,000 people were relocated from adult prisons and juvenile centers in the path of Florence, and more than 300 county prisoners were transferred to state facilities.

Leaves, branches and other debris surround and cover a sports auto after Hurricane Florence hit Wilmington.

At 11 a.m., the centre of Florence was about 20 miles (30 kilometres) southwest of Wilmington, its winds down to 80 mph (130 kmh), according to the hurricane centre. The storm is expected to turn west and then north moving through the Carolinas and the Ohio Valley by Monday, the NHC said early on Saturday.

"When the conditions in the area intensified suddenly, we made the call to have our news staff evacuate the area and team up with our sister station WPDE in Myrtle Beach to continue covering the storm and providing our viewers with vital, potentially life-saving, information", General Manager Matt Bowman said in a statement posted to the station's website.

The hurricane came ashore early on Friday, pounding the state with torrential rain and high winds.

A warming climate also means that the atmosphere can hold more and more water vapor, fueling hurricanes with even more water that can fall on coastal areas.
