Democratic senators on Sunday called for the Senate Judiciary Committee to delay its planned vote on Brett Kavanaugh's nomination for the Supreme Court after a woman who accused him of sexual misconduct revealed her identity. She says Kavanaugh groped her over her clothes, grinded his body against hers and tried to take off her one-piece swimsuit and the outfit she wore over it. She tried to scream, but Kavanaugh allegedly put his hand over her mouth.
She said she was able to escape when Kavanaugh's friend, Mark Judge, jumped on top of them, sending all three tumbling.
The White House's only comment Sunday was the re-send to the Post Judge Kavanaugh's statement from last week that "I categorically and unequivocally deny this allegation".
According to the PostMs. Ford first detailed the incident in 2012, "when she was in couples therapy with her husband". She said the investigation should occur before the Senate moves ahead with Kavanaugh's nomination. In any event, Kavanaugh has issued a blanket denial.
Until now, Kavanaugh has been widely viewed as on a glide path toward confirmation, and it is unclear whether Ford's account will change that. She had forwarded it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who added it to Kavanaugh's background file ― but said it had no plans to investigate the allegation further.
The White House's response to the allegation raises the cultural stakes of the fight. She told the Post the alleged attack left her terrified, but she vowed to herself at the time that she would not tell anyone what had happened. She said she just wanted to send her allegation to her member of Congress and sit back. Republicans criticized her decision to withhold the allegations during Kavanaugh's Senate confirmation hearings. However, Slate points out that Judge has written about his struggle with alcoholism, including black-out drunkenness, fictionalizing the name of the school he attended and referring to another individual who he names "Bart O'Kavanaugh", who partook in enough alcohol to vomit in someone else's vehicle and pass out. There is a way back to the better times of which Ginsburg spoke, though it will require great courage and character - to confirm the highly qualified Kavanaugh with a bipartisan vote. After she heard the boys "going down the stairs, hitting the walls", she said she made it downstairs and out the door, but doesn't remember how she got home.
The person "declined to come forward or press the matter further, and I have honored that decision", Feinstein said.
A registered Democrat, Ford contacted her representative in Congress, Democrat Ann Eshoo, around the same time. She reached out to the Post before Kavanaugh was nominated, refuting the notion that she is part of some desperate last-ditch effort to derail his nomination.
"Now I feel like my civic responsibility is outweighing my anguish and terror about retaliation", Ford told the Post.
Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, released a statement Sunday afternoon calling the allegations "uncorroborated allegations from more than 35 years ago" and questioning the timing of the emergence of the letter.
