Trump dismisses Woodward book as a joke

Jonathan Karp, president and publisher of Simon & Schuster, said sales were "with the force of a cultural phenomenon", as Woodward continues a round of media appearances this week.

Woodward has said he stands by the reporting in his book, which offers a harrowing portrayal of Trump's tenure, with aides seeking to curb his worst impulses, and Trump denigrating some of those who work around him, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

"The Woodward book is a scam", Trump tweeted on Friday. Many senior aides have also scrambled to deny they made the comments, claiming they weren't quoted accurately by the investigative reporter.

In it, Woodward claims that Defense Secretary James Mattis once said the president has the understanding of "a fifth- or sixth-grader" and that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly called Trump an "idiot". It seems as though Woodward shouldn't experience that anymore, considering the political history that he's lived through and reported on.

"And what you want to do is say, do you have any documents or notes. and they say no, no, no".

"We should just go borrow a lot of money right now, hold it, and then sell it to make money", Trump suggested. "I think it's probably six to a dozen people". "The things that Trump did and does jeopardizes the real national security". Woodward also writes that Trump refused to send any additional aid.

The author writes that Porter and White House economic adviser Gary Cohn helped stave off some of Trump's attempts to end free-trade agreements, even to the point of stealing paper off the Resolute Desk so the president didn't see them. Instead, Sanders said just the notion the unidentified official may be involved in national security matters was grounds enough to launch a probe.

Carlos Lozada is one of the best-read people in the country. Woodward goes on "The Daily Briefing" to talk about his new book 'Fear'.

Woodward shrugged off Trump calling him a liar on Twitter, saying he feels comfortable the truth will ultimately win. Trump, she said, had achieved "tremendous success" with his policies so far toward North Korea "and this letter was further evidence of progress in that relationship".

"One key person who's in office called me and said, "Everyone knows what you said here is true". "I think we have to stop doing that and saying, 'Let's use it in a way that we can tell the public'".

It's a far more rigorous approach than, say, a recent, infamous "anonymous" New York Times op-ed from one unnamed senior administration official claiming to be "thwarting Mr. Trump's more misguided impulses", the self-satisfied, political equivalent of a "my job here is done" meme when you consider just how numerous president's impulses get out regardless. And Trump says, "Who's paying for it?" "It's critical: Who is this person and why are they masking themselves in this way?"

"That's fine", Cohn said, Woodward reports.
