Croatia suffer worst ever defeat with Spain mauling — UEFA Nations League

This match had the potential to be a thrilling affair with two talented teams, and it certainly lived up to that.

Are the World Cup finalists suffering from a hangover after their loss to France in Russian Federation? Spain were in a confident mood after winning their first game under Luis Enrique 2-1 away to England in their Nations League opener on Saturday and once they scored the floodgates opened and Croatia were left chasing shadows.

Croatia's Ivan Santini was guilty of missing early on but once Spain pulled ahead, the visitors crumbled.

But, perhaps more importantly, it should also give the players belief in Luis Enrique's methods. In the 57th minute, Spain captain Sergio Ramos headed in his 14th worldwide goal for the team's fifth on the night.

Marco Asensio was on a mad one last night versus Croatia. Two minutes later, the Real Madrid midfielder rocketed another shot that rattled the crossbar and clipped Kalinic, settling in for an own-goal off the diving Croatian stopper.

Spain started the second half with the same intensity as they had in the first half, and it didn't take them long to score. Sergio Ramos added to the scoreline with a header from Asensio's corner after some awful marking. "We needed to recuperate the feelings we had before, we've played two great games", said goalscorer Asensio, who also provided three assists.

Spain worldwide Marco Asensio, who struggled to cement his place in Los Blancos' first team last season, was tipped to leave the 13-time UEFA Champions League winners after Liverpool reportedly showed some interest in him. However, it is the biggest defeat in Croatia's history, so it was a dismal day for them. "I only see one shirt, the Spain shirt". Enrique's decision to play him on the right flank worked well because he was able to cut inside on his favoured foot with deadly effect and Carvajal was a willing overlapping full-back to keep the defence stretched.

Surely, a player and coach of his pedigree couldn't possibly do that though, could he?

But it hasn't all been smooth sailing for Enrique by any means.

"The attitude of all the players has been very good".
